- Story Text: Beijing residents said on Thursday (April 3) that they were bullish on prospects for China after the U.S.'s latest tariff announcement.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday (April 2) announced that China would be hit with a 34% tariff, on top of the 20% he previously imposed earlier this year, bringing the total new levies to 54% and close to the 60% figure he had threatened while on the campaign trail.
One Beijing resident, surnamed Zhang, said for China's economic circulation, the tariff hike of 34% could both be "an opportunity and a challenge" as he stressed that it's "something we've grown accustomed to", given how long the trade war between the two countries has been going on for. Another resident, surnamed Wang, said it would not impact individuals as much, but it's something that export businesses in China "might need to take seriously".
China has urged the United States to immediately cancel its latest tariffs and vowed countermeasures to safeguard its own interests.
