- Story Text:Vietnamese citizens on Thursday (April 3) expressed concern about the potential impact on the country's economy, in the wake of the U.S. tariff announcement.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new baseline 10% U.S. tariff on all imports on Wednesday, with far higher levies on some trading partners, particularly in Asia.
Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, a 25-year-old Samsung phone store employee in Hanoi, predicted that the tariffs would lead to higher living costs. Meanwhile, a local garment seller warned that exporters to the US market could face reduced profits.
Vietnam's dong hit an all-time low on Thursday and its stocks were set for their worst session in more than four years, as the country faces one of the heftiest reciprocal tariffs under U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping new levies.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held an urgent cabinet meeting early on Thursday, state media reported, hours after the Trump administration said Vietnam would be hit with U.S. tariffs of 46% as it announced a global round of tariffs.
Vietnam has announced in the past weeks a series of measures, including boosting U.S. imports, to reduce its trade surplus with Washington, as it tries to avoid tariffs from the Trump administration. The Southeast Asian industrial hub has also allowed Elon Musk's SpaceX to launch its Starlink satellite internet service on a trial basis in the country.
