- Story Text:The impact of the United States’ newly-announced global reciprocal tariffs is yet to be fully apparent, but an Indian garment producer on Thursday (April 3) suggested that while there will be turmoil in the short term, Washington’s newly-imposed duties could present an advantage for his industry.
“It could be positive because tariffs are not only in India, it is to all the countries and so buyers will have to make up their mind,” said Tony Uppal, the founder and chairman of Pee-Empro Exports.
The United States slapped a 26% reciprocal tariff on India, dealing a blow to the South Asian country's hopes of relief under President Donald Trump's global trade policy.
With Trump charging a higher tariff on China, sectors where India can gain market share in shipments to U.S. include textiles, apparel and footwear, according to an internal Indian government report reviewed by Reuters.
