- Story Text: Dozens of students from major Serbian universities set off on a 1,300 kilometres long bike ride to Strasbourg on Thursday (April 3) aiming to raise awareness within European Union institutions about months long anti-government protests in Serbia.
A group of 80 cyclists, mainly students joined by several activists, left the northern city of Novi Sad where last November, 16 people died in a railway roof collapse, a disaster that triggered biggest anti-government protests in decades.
Family members and citizens defied the rain to greet the cyclists as they set off.
"We have no fear, mileage will be the biggest challenge for us," said Filip Markovic of the Belgrade University.
According to the plan, students joined by several activists, should reach Strasburg on April 17.
The protests have swelled to include students, teachers and farmers in a major challenge to President Aleksandar Vucic, a populist in power for 12 years as prime minister or president.
