- Story Text:African Union (AU) mediators, as part of the 'Council of Wise', arrived in South Sudan's capital Juba on Wednesday (April 2), seeking to prevent a fresh civil war after Vice President Riek Machar was put under House Arrest last week. The government of President Salva Kiir, accuses Machar, a rival from the destructive 2013-18 war, of inciting new unrest.
Tensions have escalated following weeks of conflict in the northern Upper Nile state between the military and the White Army militia, with whom Machar was previously allied.
Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni, landed in the country on Thursday (April 3) to lend a hand on the situation.
The AU's Peace and Security Council has demanded an "immediate and unconditional release" for Machar, warning that the recent developments endanger the 2018 peace accord that concluded the war. The SPLM-IO party, associated with Machar, has expressed approval for the Council of Wise's involvement in the peace process.
Notably, Kenya's former Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrived in Juba on Monday (March 31) representing an East African regional body to mediate, but was denied access to Machar.
Analysts suggest that Kiir is striving to consolidate his position amidst political discontent and a worsening security situation due to the influx of weapons from the ongoing war in neighbouring Sudan.
