- Story Text:NATO foreign ministers gathered in Brussels on on Thursday (April 3) as tensions rose over President Donald Trump's steep new trade tariffs.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was among those who attended the meeting, as Europeans hoped he would dispel doubts about the U.S. stance even with tensions rising over Trump's sweeping tariffs on imports from U.S. trading partners.
The United States is as committed to NATO as ever but demands that European allies spend substantially more on defense, Rubio said on Thursday (April 3), while adding that the U.S. would give allies some time to do that.
The Trump administration's words and actions have raised questions about the future of NATO, the transatlantic alliance that has been the bedrock of European security for the past 75 years.
