- Story Text: British filmmaker Guy Ritchie takes viewers into the dark world of organized crime in "MobLand", his latest television series that features a stellar ensemble cast including Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren.
The ten-episode show centers on two feuding London crime families, the Harrigans and the Stevensons. "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Venom" actor Hardy plays the Harrigans' well-connected fixer, Harry Da Souza.
"MobLand" comes hot on the heels of Ritchie's hit 2024 Netflix series "The Gentlemen". Ritchie, 56, who made his feature film debut with the 1998 crime comedy "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and has gone on to direct movies including "Snatch", "Sherlock Holmes" and "Aladdin”.
"MobLand" stars Brosnan as the Harrigan family head, Conrad, with Mirren playing his influence-wielding wife Maeve.
Co-star Lara Pulver said the show’s ensemble of smart actors makes it difference from other crime dramas.
“There's always something really interesting when no one's playing the obvious mob show. I think Jez (Butterworth) has written it more layered than that, and I, and I think there's irony, there's wit, there is humor, and it's almost like a self-deprecating awareness of each other,” said Pulver.
Brosnan received the script from Ritchie last summer while he was working with Mirren on their upcoming movie "The Thursday Murder Club" and the two agreed to embark on the project.
“I read five scripts and I had no idea what was going to happen after that. I just put my money on the five scripts, Guy. And then Helen (Mirren) jumped in, so we were off to the races then,” said Brosnan.
While the twists and turns of the show are exciting for viewers, Brosnan said it is sometimes a challenge for him.
“It keeps you on your toes and it can be a little bit edgy, close to the edge there when you're waiting for the next episode to come in and you get it and you learn the lines and then they change them, they rewrite. It can be, it can be little bit dodgy at times,” said Brosnan.
"MobLand", which is written by Ronan Bennett and Jez Butterworth, starts streaming on Paramount+ on March 30.
