- Story Text: Cambodian Commerce Minister Cham Nimul on Thursday (April 3) refuted U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that Phnom Penh imposes a high tax rate on U.S. goods entering the country and said that the effect of Trump’s latest tariffs will be felt by the United States first.
Trump said on Wednesday (April 2) that he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the United States and higher duties on some of the country's biggest trading partners.
The White House posted images of the charts used by Trump to describe the tariffs to be applied to 185 countries and territories around the world. Cambodia was indicated on the charts to have a 97% duty on incoming American goods, with a reciprocal U.S. tariff listed as 49%.
But Cham Nimul said " the highest tariff line we have on imported products from the United States to Cambodia is only 29.4%.”
Speaking to state television TVK on Thursday, Cham Nimul added that she expects the U.S., as a major buyer of low-cost imported goods, to feel the impact of higher taxes.
Trump also called on foreign companies to build their products in the U.S. to avoid tariffs.
He said the levies will bring jobs back to the United States, but company executives were focused on possible increases to prices, reducing shipments or cutting back investment activity outright. Markets had tumbled at Trump's actions, which could undo decades of global trade patterns and take many years of adjustment by the business community.
