- Story Text: U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus met with Lebanese officials during a visit to Baabda and Beirut in Lebanon on Saturday (April 5).
The various meetings included Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a day after Israel killed a commander of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in an airstrike in southern Lebanon, further testing a shaky U.S.-brokered ceasefire that halted last year's war between Israel and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.
The ceasefire, agreed in November, has appeared increasingly precarious in recent weeks, with Israel striking the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut twice and rockets being fired on two occasions from Lebanon towards Israel.
Hezbollah has denied any role in the recent rocket fire.
