- Story Text: Germany and manager Rudi Voeller prepare for a Euro
2004 warm-up match against Belgium.
Coach Rudi Voeller announced his squad on Thursday
(March 25) for the March 31 friendly against Belgium and
presented the jerseys the national team will wear during
the June and July tournament.
He confirmed that Arsenal's Jens Lehmann will play in
goal for Germany. Voeller had already said that number one
goalkeeper and captain Oliver Kahn would be given a break
for the friendly international in Cologne. He was holding
to a decision he had taken before Lehmann caused uproar in
February by saying he felt he was better than Kahn.
The two goalkeepers are expected to be named in
Germany's squad for the Euro 2004 finals in Portugal
starting on June 12 with Bayern Munich's Kahn the number
one.
"I have never said they had to spend their holidays
together but they must have a sensible relationship and
they will," said Voeller, who knows his two goalkeepers are
not the best of friends.
There were no surprises in Voeller's 21-man squad and
only one newcomer is VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Timo
Hildebrand who will be Lehmann's reserve for the game.
Stuttgart defender Philipp Lahm was called up again. He
impressed Voeller in his international debut in a 2-1
friendly win over Croatia last month in Split.
Bayern Munich midfielder Sebastian Deisler, who has
just resumed training after being treated for depression,
and Borussia Dortmund Christoph Metzelder, nursing a
serious injury, were not in the squad.
TSV 1860 Munich striker Benjamin Lauth, who has been
described by Voeller as a unique talent, has struggled
lately and will have to be content with playing in
Germany's under-21 team against Georgia on Tuesday.
