- Story Text: Israeli forces surround the home of a bomber who
tried to disguise a car bomb which exploded wounding four
soldiers.
Israeli soldiers thwarted an attempted car bombing
against the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom in the Gaza
Strip on Wednesday (April 28), military sources said.
Soldiers in a military jeep gave chase after a
Palestinian vehicle disguised as an Israeli car decorated
with an Israeli flag approached the settlement, the sources
said.
Suspecting an attack, the soldiers in the jeep opened
fire at the vehicle and it exploded.
Four of the soldiers in the jeep were wound, one
seriously.
"An army unit of the Tzabar battalion succeeded in
identifying the car as a car bomb and responding to it
rapidly, apparently to kill the terrorist that was inside
it before the blast. As a result of that, the car exploded
- not on the jeep but near the jeep. Soldiers were lightly
to moderately wounded," explained Lieutenant Colonel Tomer,
an army spokesman at the scene.
The militant group Hamas claimed responsibility for the
attack. It identified the bomber as Tareq Hmaid, 24, from
central Gaza's Nusseirat refugee camp and said he was
killed in the blast.
Israeli military vehicles surrounded the home of Hmaid
as bulldozers moved into the area shortly after the
incident.
Friends and family members gathered to console Hmaid's
father who said his son was motivated by Israeli attacks
against Palestinians.
"Tareq's operation was only a reaction to the terrorist
attacks by the Zionist occupiers against our people,
against our elderly and women in the homeland and in
exile," said Diab Hmaid.
The attack took place a day after tens of thousands of
Israelis attended Independence Day celebrations at Gaza's
Gush Katif settlement bloc to protest against Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon's plans to evacuate Jewish
settlements in the Gaza Strip.
The plan calls for uprooting all Jewish settlements in
Gaza and four of 120 in the West Bank.
Palestinians see Sharon's plan as a ruse to annex large
swathes of West Bank territory they want for a state.
Sharon's right-wing Likud party will hold a referendum
on Sunday (May 2) on his Gaza withdrawal plan, which is
part of a broader scheme of unilateral separation from the
Palestinians.
