- Story Text: About 500,000 Egyptians have joined an anti-war rally
organised by the ruling National Democratic Party in Cairo,
urging a peaceful end to the Iraq crisis.
Crowds marched slowly along streets near the memorial
to the unknown soldier and a sports stadium in a Cairo suburb
on Wednesday (March 5).
Several officials attended the demonstration, including
Gamal Mubarak, son of President Hosni Mubarak, head of an NDP
(National Democratic Party) policy-making body.
Until recently, most anti-war demonstrations have remained
relatively muted affairs with many Egyptians saying they are
too busy with everyday life to march.
But tens of thousands of demonstrators, including members
of opposition parties, were allowed to vent popular anger at
possible U.S.-led strikes against Iraq at a stadium.
There were also calls for Arabs to tackle Middle Eastern
affairs as a united body, in particular the Palestinian issue.
"As for Palestine, this is a case where the Arab nation
has to unite and to take a decision. This decision has been
mentioned by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who
gathered us with the scientists of the Azhar and this meeting
indicated that the Arab nation has to unite and must have a
united market and economy. So if the Arab nation united and
held hands, none of the bloodshed would have happened," said
Sheikh Mohamed Mahmoud of the Azhar Mosque.
