- Story Text: Hundreds of Palestinians have participated in an anti
war raIly in southern Gaza as the Israeli army continued its
raid into the northern part of the Gaza Strip. Six
Palestinians were killed in the operation which Israel said
was aimed at destroying the militants' infrastructure.
Palestinians took to the streets on Sunday (February
23) in support of Iraq and its president Saddam Hussein. In a
demonstration in Rafah, in southern Gaza, the protesters
burned the United States and the British flags, and carried
posters of Saddam and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Earlier, the demonstrators carried stretchers with young
children who posed as bodies. In another corner of the
protest, men burned a cardboard model of a United Kingdom
warplane.
The demonstration took place hours after Israeli forces
killed seven Palestinians, at least five of them armed, in the
northern Gaza Strip. It was the latest phase of the army's
week-old offensive against Islamic militant strongholds.
Israeli armoured columns backed by helicopter gunships
rumbled into the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun in
the early hours of Sunday morning (February 23), battling
gunmen and destroying the homes of six Islamic militants.
Palestinian sources said six Palestinians were killed in
Beit Hanoun, including four gunmen and members of the
Palestinian security forces and one stone-thrower.
The Israeli army said that a seventh Palestinian, armed
with an AK-47 assault rifle and hand grenades, was killed
during an attempt to infiltrate the Jewish settlement of
Netzarim in central Gaza.
The deaths raised to 41 the number of Palestinians killed
this week, most in Israeli military raids into the Gaza Strip.
Raanan Gissin, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's
advisor, said of the raids:
"This operation which takes place in both places is a
sustained operation which will continue for several weeks to
make certain that there are not more Qassam rockets fired at
Israeli villages and towns and that suicide bombers are
stopped at the doorsteps of their homes,"
At least 1,868 Palestinians and 705 Israelis have been
killed since the Palestinian uprising began in September 2000.
