- Story Text: Several hundred demonstrators in Bahrain have staged a
protest against a possible war on Iraq by the United States.
Thirty-four political and religious groups joined the
protest in the Bahraini capital Manama on Friday (January 3, 2003).
Protesters, who gathered after Friday prayers at the Grand
Mosque, chanted "Our voices must be heard by the leaders" and
"The land of the Arabs is for the Arabs."
Demonstrator Hassan Al Ali said that the demonstration was
a show of support for the people of Iraq, and a show of
opposition to any war on the country.
"This is a demonstration to show Bahraini support for our
Iraqi brothers in Iraq," he said.
"So everybody today wants to show his feeling, and this is
a purely peaceful feeling just to show our support as well as
our refusal to the war in this region."
Bahrain is a key U.S. ally and headquarters of the U.S.
Navy's Fifth fleet.
The tiny country has seen several protests against U.S.
policies, including petrol bomb attacks against the American
embassy in the capital Manama in 2002.
Last October, hundreds of Bahrainis, some shouting "Death
to America", protested against possible military attacks by
the United States on Iraq. They urged Gulf Arab states not to
cooperate with Washington in an attack on Iraq over Baghdad's
alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction.
The United States has been reinforcing troops in the
oil-rich Gulf region for a possible attack on Baghdad. Most of
Washington's Gulf Arab allies publicly oppose an attack on
Iraq.
