- Story Text: The airport at Kandahar, former spiritual capital of
Afghanistan's ousted Taliban, bore signs of war damage on
Wednesday. Bloodstains and ammunition surrounded a destroyed
car near the airport.
The spiritual home of Afghanistan's Taliban showed
signs of major destruction on Wednesday as it recovered from a
U.S. backed campaign.
Cars wrecked by missile fire or bombs littered the road
leading to the airport. Machine gun and rocket-propelled
grenade ammunition lay around one car and there were also
bloodstains. Buildings, gates, doors and walls had all
sustained damage but commerce appeared to be flowing on a road
between Kandahar and the border with Pakistan.
Mulla Omar, leader of the Taliban, fled his house and on
Wednesday fighters loyal to warlord Gul Agha had entered the
house and were even sitting on a bed in his bedroom.
The campaign against the Taliban was sparked by terror
attacks on New York and Washington on September 11.
