- Story Text: Twenty-nine-year-old Tamega, who last won the event in
1994, rode to victory on Wednesday (January 16) in the 20th
Annual Mike Stewart International Pipeline Pro.
Coming in second was Ben Player followed by Ryan Hardy,
both from Australia, and Rui Ferriera of Portugal in fourth
position.
Tamega, of Rio De Janeiro, also won the Global
Organization of Bodyboarders World Tour title for the 5th
time, and the inaugural "Supertour" of invitational events for
the elite 24 riders in the sport, making the day a historic
triple whammy for the quiet Brazilian.
In the most unusual heat of the day, eleven time event and
nine time world champion Mike Stewart was eliminated from his
own contest on a controversial double interference call.
Stewart and fellow competitor Andre Botha of South Africa
crossed paths on a wave at the Pipeline, each trying to ride
in opposite directions. An interference call results in the
loss of one scoring wave for each surfer making it almost
impossible to advance out of the heat.
Stewart was disappointed in the loss but very happy with
his role in promoting a successful contest and a healthy sport
for people of all ages and skill levels.
The Mike Stewart International Pipeline Pro has long been
considered the most prestigious contest in the sport of
bodyboarding.
The wave at the Banzai Pipeline is one of the most
dangerous venues in surfing with powerful deep ocean swells
breaking on a shallow lava reef. The shape of the wave makes
it perfect for deep tube rides inside the curl and dramatic
aerial manoeuvres off the crashing lip of the wave.
Over 150 entries from 16 countries made this a truly
international and world class event.
