- Story Text: Hundreds of men, women and children took to the streets of Kabul on Sunday (March 6) to protest the deaths of civilians in a NATO raid.
The chanted "Death to America, Taliban and the Afghan Government" as they marched, holding banners and photographs of the victims of the attack which included children.
"We are participating here today because our innocent people were killed in a brutal operation by NATO in Kunar province," said Afghan protester Ghaos Uddin Bakhtyar.
"The international community are witnesses to those killed in the NATO operation but they are not really paying attention to this. We want to raise this issue," added schoolgirl Azada.
The commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan made a rare apology earlier in the week for an air strike that killed nine civilians.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai also condemned what he called the "daily" killings of innocent Afghans in foreign air strikes.
Civilian casualties caused by NATO-led and Afghan forces hunting insurgents have become a great source of friction between Karzai and Washington, but U.N. figures show insurgents are responsible for more than three-quarters of the total. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
