- Story Text: Scuffles between protesters and police in front of the government building in Chisinau but no repeat of Tuesday's violence.
There were scuffles between anti-communist protesters and police in front of the government building in Chisinau on Wednesday (April 8) but no repeat of Tuesday's violence as night fell in Moldova.
Opposition parties on wednesday called off further rallies after the violence which erupted during protests by 10,000 people against the victory of the ruling Communist party in Sunday's election.
Riot police rounded up protesters after clearing them from the president's office -- from whose roof they had waved Moldovan, Romanian and European Union flags -- and from the parliament building to which they had set fire.
About 1,500 people remained outside the government building which was guarded by dozens of riot police.
Chanting 'Down with communism!' and 'Voronin get Out' protesters pushed against the police cordon around the government building.
Protesters threw plastic bottles at police and scuffles broke out but there was no repeat of the violence on Tuesday which left one dead and over 100 people injured. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
