- Story Text: Members of the Islamic Hizb ut-Tahrir protested on Tuesday (February 26) outside the Turkish embassy in Amman.
They're calling on Turkey to do more to prevent the bloodshed in neighbouring Syria and are calling on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to take military action against Syria's Bashar al-Assad.
Dozens of male protesters waved flags and chanted slogans, 'Oh Erdogan traitor of our Umma' standing behind banners that read 'conspiracy and betrayal.'
"The protest was held under the banner of "Conspiracy and Betrayal" by the Turkish regime in its position towards the Syrian revolution. Erdogan has said more than once that he will not allow for a second Hama to occur, and here we are witnessing more than what happened in Hama, more of a slaughter and more of a massacre," said the party's Media Officer Mamdouh Qdeishat.
Thousands of people were killed in the Hama massacre in 1982 when President Bashar al-Assad's father, Hafez al-Assad, sent troops loyal to his Alawite minority sect to crush an Islamist uprising there.
Protesters outside the embassy say Turkey should not follow the West, ''We say to the Turkish regime, you must refrain from conforming to the west, you must break free from following the west, and you must intervene in Syria with the incentive of pleasing God and with the incentive of advocating Islam and muslims," added Qdeishat.
Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamic international party with a vision for the restoration of the Islamic caliphate was abolished by the secular Turkish strongman Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1924.
The group was founded in the 1950's with the goal of uniting all Muslims around the world.
Over the past 60 years, the party has spread to more than 40 countries, and claims to have up to one million members, despite being banned in some states. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
