Republican Mitt Romney conceded the U.S. presidential election to President Barack Obama early on Wednesday (November 7) in front of a disheartened crowd of supporters.
Romney publicly thanked his wife in front of a crowd of thousands in Boston before waving and exiting the stage prompting a mass exodus of his diehard supporters who waited several hours to see their candidate after learning he had lost the election.
Television networks called the election late on Tuesday, but the Romney campaign waited more than an hour to agree on the results in Ohio.
"Deflated. Disappointed. Still believe in the country," described David Bradford, who came all the way from Utah with his wife for the hoped for celebration.
"I'm feeling proud of Mitt Romney and Ann Romney. They have been courageous, people of integrity. They've run a clean campaign -- much less attack than the other campaign did. I'm proud of them. They've represented all of us in the Republican Party very well," said his wife Linda on their way out the door.
Leaving behind tears and spilled drinks on the floor of the Convention Center, most Republican supporters remained positive about the Romney campaign.
"We're proud of the work the governor did. They gave it their all as they said. We're happy about that and to be a part of it. We now have to go ... get galvanized as a country and move forward," said Boston resident Michael George.
"There's no question they left it all out on the field. They did well and worked hard. It just didn't work out this time," added Mark Leavitt.
Obama defeated Romney in a number of key swing states, despite the weak economic recovery and stubbornly high unemployment that dogged his campaign.
Bradford added his thoughts on what the Republican Party needed to do to regain the White House.
"I think they need to broaden its base. I think they need to reach out to Latinos strongly and be a gathering place for people across the globe, not just in the United States. This is becoming a much more diverse citizenry in the United States, so I think the Republican Party needs to reach out and embrace that and understand that," he offered.
This is the second time the former Massachusetts governor has made a run for the presidency, and the third time for his family after his father's bid in 1968. There is no word yet if Romney will remain in politics after the loss. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
