- Story Text: Close to one thousand Russian nationalists took to the streets in Moscow on Wednesday (May 1) to participate in a rally held on Russia's Labour Day holiday.
Carrying black and yellow flags, and banners the marchers chanted phrases such as "Go Russians!"
One of Russia's nationalist leaders, Dmitry Demushkin said that the action was aimed to attract government's attention to illegal immigration in Russia.
"Nationalists hold their traditional actions four times a year. These are the main actions when we come out and demand to sort out the mess with illegal immigration, cheap labour, (and support) the rights and freedoms of Russians first and foremost," Demushkin said.
"Today is the national Labour Day, it's a holiday. The biggest difference from the left's (Communists) May 1 is that we we don't think that Russia is for all, but that it is, first and foremost for Russians. We don't want crowds of immigrants. Our people have to work for decent pay, our young people should be able to buy a flat, start a family," another nationalist leader Alexander Belov said.
Russia attracts millions of migrants from former Soviet Union states, which depend on their remittances. In cities they are often attacked by ultra nationalists, and are easy prey for corrupt police who extort bribes for minor violations. Polls show xenophobia increasing.
Many migrants toil at construction sites for meagre salaries and live in crowded barracks where infectious diseases are widespread and which are regularly raided by the Federal Migration Service. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
