- Story Text: More than ten thousand South Korean workers marched down streets in Seoul on Wednesday (May 1) to commemorate Labour Day and demand better working conditions.
The workers gathered in central Seoul and chanted slogans while holding up banners with messages such as "a world without layoffs and irregular employees" and "increase minimum wage".
The participants belonged to the Korea Confederation of Trade Union (KCTU), one of the country's major umbrella unions.
"Today is the 123rd Labour Day throughout the world. The Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) is holding a rally to fight for improvement of worker's rights and interests," said Jeong Ho-hee, a spokesman of the KCTU.
The KCTU grew up with the country's democracy movement in the 1980s that eventually pushed aside years of autocratic government.
The Labour Day rally was approved by the government in advance and remained peaceful without any clashes or scuffles with police. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
