- Story Text: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif rallied his supporters on Friday (May 3) as he lashed out at his political opponents during a huge election rally in Pakistan's central city of Multan.
Addressing thousands of his supporters, Sharif, who is the chief of his own faction of the Muslim League, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), criticized the Pakistan People's Party and Imran Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaaf.
He was received by thousands of supporters who cheered: "Come, Come, Lion Come". Lion is the election symbol of Nawaz Sharif's party.
"O' You People's Party guys, you should have served these people and they would have been your supporters. Today, your campaign is running nowhere, but only on television and newspapers. What have you given to this nation? What have you done for these people?" Sharif told the flag-waving crowd.
"I want to tell all those who are in the ground. They should believe they are no more in the ground (field) of politics from now on. They are in the ground of cricket, only cricket," Sharif added in a bid to taunt his election rival Imran Khan.
Khan and Nawaz Sharif, a two-time prime minister whose PML-N party is said to be the frontrunner, are the only two leaders addressing big rallies despite security threats in the country.
A rally of Imran Khan in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city, was cancelled last Sunday (April 28) after attacks on ANP and MQM parties killed more than 20 people.
The three main parties in the outgoing government, the PPP, the MQM and the ANP, have curtailed public gatherings in the face of direct Taliban threats.
Nawaz Sharif said the people will have to give their vote to PML-N on May 11 for development and prosperity of the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
