- Story Text: Supporters of overthrown Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi appeared defiant on Saturday (July 6), after deadly clashes overnight threatened to split the country.
At least 30 people died and more than 1,000 were wounded after Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood movement called "Friday of Rejection" protests across the country and tried to march on the military compound where the ousted president is held.
On Saturday, they gathered outside a mosque in a Cairo suburb to express their continued anger at the removal of Mursi by the army.
''Don't think that with time, the people are going to stop gathering in the squares, absolutely not, the people are not going to back down until the president returns,'' one protester said near the Rabaa mosque.
Mursi supporters have been using the mosque area as their gathering place for several days, holding up the former president's picture and vowing to continue to press for his reinstatement. Mursi himself is said to be held in custody by the military at the Republican Guard barracks.
Some Mursi supporters even called for firm action to be taken against army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who announced a dramatic ultimatum last week that gave Mursi just 48 hours to agree on a power-sharing deal with his rivals.
''He is a traitor and traitors should be executed. Execution for (army chief General Abdel Fattah al-) Sisi and his aides,'' said one of those gathered in the square.
State-owned newspapers said the army-backed authorities that took power on Wednesday and suspended the constitution, would announce the appointment of a prime minister on Saturday to run the country during a transition period. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
