- Story Text: Scores of Argentines marched on downtown Buenos Aires on Thursday (October 17) to mark Peronist Loyalty Day, wishing an absent President Cristina Fernandez a speedy recovery from surgery earlier this month.
The centre-left leader normally leads Peronist activists and workers for the event to mark the release of former President Juan Peron from jail but has been advised to take 30 days of strict rest to recover from an operation to remove blood from the surface of her brain.
Fernandez supporters turned out for the rally in honour of their recovering leader.
"Because it's October 17 and we want offer our presence for Cristina so that she can get better. Her people are anxious to see her, to hear her, because she is creating a wonderful country," said Fernandez supporter, Maria Cristina Villaroel.
"I felt encouraged to come, it's not something I planned. it's not something prefabricated but I am sorry because I really share the president's ideas and the model for the country," said supporter, Sandro Lopez.
Fernandez is known for her protectionist trade policies, currency controls and nationalisation of the country's main airline, oil company and private pension system.
But not all at the rally were singing Fernandez's praises.
Slamming the government's record on employment and economic management, leader of the opposition General Confederation of Labour movement, Hugo Moyano, hit out at members of Fernandez's cabinet.
"Some prefer the perfume of (government) officials. We prefer the sweat of the workers, who have more aroma than officials. This is the difference," declared Moyano.
Fernandez's surgery has come at a sensitive time for her administration. Argentines are increasingly unhappy about double-digit inflation and government-imposed currency controls that have clamped down on access to U.S. dollars as part of an effort to halt capital flight.
Fernandez is also embroiled in a legal battle against holdout bond investors who declined to participate in Argentina's 2005 and 2010 debt restructurings and are suing for full repayment. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
