- Story Text: North Korean defectors and anti-North protesters in Seoul rallied against North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on what is believed to be his birthday on Wednesday (January 8).
Though the date of Kim's has never been officially confirmed.
About 150 protesters chanted anti-North Korea slogans: "Condemn Kim Jong Un! Give up the nuclear programme".
The protesters slashed North Korea's national flag and burned an effigy of Kim.
"Today is Kim Jong Un's birthday and we are here to strongly condemn North Korea's dictatorship, the reign of terror and slaughter politics on behalf of the United Nations and the international community as well as South Korean people. We strongly urge North Korea to give up its nuclear programme promptly and free North Korean people," said South Korean protester Park Chan-sung.
On December 13, Kim's uncle Jang Song Thaek, considered the second most powerful man in the secretive country, was executed. His execution was the biggest upheaval in years in North Korea, which has conducted three nuclear tests and this year raised the possibility of nuclear war with South Korea and the United States.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye has described recent events in North Korea as a "reign of terror."
The purging of Jang was widely seen as a sign of factionalism within the secretive government. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
