- Story Text: South Korean protesters held a rally on Wednesday (March 19) against North Korea's recent short-range missile launches.
North Korea fired 25 short-range rockets into the sea off the east of the Korean peninsula on Sunday (March 16) - an unusually large number - but they were obsolete weapons that were likely around 40 years old, South Korea's Defence Ministry has said.
About 100 protesters gathered in central Seoul for the rally and burnt North Korean flag as well as pickets bearing photographs of Kim Jong Un and missiles.
"North Korea keeps firing missiles. The international society and we, South Koreans, cannot tolerate such provocative acts by North Korea," said South Korean protest leader Park Chan-sung.
North Korea is not banned from short-range missile launches under U.N. sanctions and frequently tests its arsenal.
The North has toned down its bellicose rhetoric toward the South, although it has denounced the annual joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises that are currently taking place.
It undertook a series of short-range missile launches earlier this month as the joint exercise, which North Korea views as a threat to its security, started. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
