- Story Text: Russian police broke up an anti-fascist rally on Sunday (November 27), organised by the liberal "Yabloko" party and various human rights groups.
About hundred people gathered in central Moscow, in front of the mayor's office, to protest against the permission granted by the city authorities to various nationalist organisations to stage a big demonstration in the capital. That happened on November 4.
On that day several thousand youths, including members of the Movement against Illegal Immigration, marched in Moscow, with military-style bands, Nazi-style salutes and placards declaring: "Russia for the Russians" and "Russians against occupation".
Protesters gathered in front of the mayor's office were chanting "Fascism won't pass".
Five minutes after they unfolded Russian flags and posters police moved in and quickly cleared the square, detaining about 40 people. Police claim the protest was not permitted by the city authorities, while the organisers of the rally say that according to the Russian constitution they do not have to obtain such permission. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
