- Story Text: Jordanians staged a rally outside the United States embassy in Amman on Sunday (August 3), in protest against the U.S. stance towards the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip, and its support of Israel.
Protesters burned the Israeli and U.S. flags and photos of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
They also waved the Palestinian and Jordanian flags and held banners denouncing the Israeli offensive in Gaza.
Organised by a coalition comprising the national and leftist parties in Jordan, the demonstration was held under the theme of "The U.S. is a partner with the Israel in the aggression and crime against the Arab Palestinian people".
"The message today we are sending is that we want the Americans, the United States and the Obama administration to stop funding the Israeli terrorist government and to end the Israeli apartheid in the land of Palestine," said Khaled Ramadan, a Palestinian protester currently residing in the U.S.
"This is a symbolic event held in protest against the absolute support of the US to Israel against Gaza and protesting against the US policy in the Middle East," Ahmad Armouti, another protester said.
Israel began its air and naval offensive against Gaza on July 8 following a surge of cross-border rocket salvoes by Hamas and other guerrillas, later escalating into ground incursions.
The continued fighting on Sunday pushed the Gaza death toll given by Palestinian officials to 1,775, most of them civilians.
Israel has confirmed that 64 soldiers have died in combat, while Palestinian rockets have also killed three civilians in Israel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
