- Story Text: Animal rights activists from PETA rally against
actress Jennifer Lopez at the "Monster-in-Law" premiere.
Dozens of animal rights activists from People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) gathered
outside the Mann National Theater in Westwood Friday (April
29, 2005) night to rally against actress Jennifer Lopez at
the "Monster-in-Law" premiere. An estimated one hundred
demonstrators waved posters and chanted "J-Lo, fur ho" to
show their anger at Lopez, who recently launched a new fur
fashion line.
PETA Campaign Coordinator Allison Ezell says her
organization and its supporters are trying to send the
actress a strong message.
"We're here to let J-Lo know that when it comes to
wearing fur and using fur in her fashion line, she really
needs to change her tune. J-Lo's fashion line premiered
only a few weeks after a yearlong investigation into the
Chinese fur industry was released, which revealed horrific
abuses. The Chinese fur industry provides more than half
of the fur sold in the United States. Animals were being
skinned alive and then thrown onto a pile of other living
skinned animals who were still gasping for breath and blinking."
The actress has long angered animal lovers by regularly
wearing fur clothes, and recently hit the headlines because
her new "Sweetface" clothing line includes many items of animal skin.
When asked why PETA is singling out Lopez among other
celebrities, Ezell says it's because Lopez has been very
public about her love for fur in spite of the concerns
about the horrific abuse the animals are said to be put
through in the process of acquiring their pelts.
"J-Lo has really put herself out there. And she's
making a statement everytime she leaves the house wearing a
fur, which was just about every day this winter. That she
doesn't really care about anything, anything but herself.
And so we're out here to let her know that there are a lot
of people who won't stand for that." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
