  • Story Text: Separatist protesters of Southern Herak, the main group seeking to split from Yemen's north, held a mass rally in the city of Aden on Tuesday (October 14).
    Thousands of protesters gathered and held up flags which once represented the South Yemen state, to agitate for secession from a 24-year-old union with the north.
    Radfan al-Dobais, who organised the event, said that the south would be freed from the "gangs" of Sanaa.
    "The southern peoples aim from this activity is to send a message to the world that the grappled gangs in Sanaa can't decide the destiny of the southern people, the southerns future destiny is decided from this place," he said.
    Pro-independence campaigners have been gathering from across the south over the past two days in preparation for what the leaders of Al-Hirak al-Janoubi, or the Southern movement, say will be the biggest rally in the group's history. It is timed to coincide with the 51st anniversary of an uprising that ultimately led to the withdrawal of British colonial forces from Yemen.
    At a gathering in Al-Orod square in the northern Khormaksar district on Monday (October 13), thousands of people gathered in a show of force before the main rally, chanting demands for independence and hoisting the flag of the former People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY), which was dissolved after a 1990 merger with north Yemen.
