- Story Text: A group of pro-Kremlin demonstrators rallied outside the Russian embassy in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on Wednesday (December 10) to voice their support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and call for an end to Western sanctions.
Demonstrators hung balloons on the embassy gate and carried posters reading: "V.V. Putin - fighter for justice and security in the 21st century" and "With Putin - truth and justice, as well as peace in the whole world!"
Organisers had expected at least 100 people to take part in the rally, but final numbers proved far lower.
Retired police colonel Noormarzhan Arkbaev told Reuters he believed Russia would prove a strong ally to Kyrgyzstan and help end corruption in the country.
"Since Russia is our tested ally, Russia will never leave us when in trouble. Also we have great hope that by joining the customs union we will be able to realistically strengthen the fight against Kyrgyz corruption," he said, referring to a Russia-led economic bloc that aims to bring former Soviet republics closer together and avoid them slipping into the orbit of the European Union.
Nyashanov Nazarbek, head of the "Clean Opposition Movement", praised Putin for showing bravery in the face of Western sanctions imposed as result of Russia's involvement in Ukraine.
"We have come to support Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the president of the Russian Federation, at a very difficult time and the people of Russia. At a time when Western sanctions become harsher, from America, from the European Union, they refuse to buy gas and oil (from Russia) and they specifically want to harm their economy and bring on a crisis - despite this the president of Russia finds courage and stoicism," Nazarbek said.
"He (Putin) is struggling for justice and equal treatment in the whole world. So that no one is doing what he wants, no one creates lawlessness, no one provokes some colour revolutions. No one should interfere in the internal affairs of countries, you see? So Putin stood up against them," he added.
Demonstrators had also written a letter of support addressed to Putin, which praised his "courage and firmness" toward the creation of a new world order, based on "justice and spirituality of human values" for the benefit of the whole world. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
