- Story Text: More than 100,000 young supporters of India's ruling Congress Party rallied in New Delhi on Friday (August 9) in support of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It was one of the largest youth rallies ever seen in the capital.
The mile-long procession took over an hour to reach the Delhi Boat Club lawns, where the demonstrators were addressed by the Prime Minister. The route of the procession was lined with banners and bunting, and many of the marchers were gaily dressed - giving the affair a carnival atmosphere. However, their chants proved the march was deadly serious: They demanded that black marketeers be shot.
The largest contingent came from the Punjab - 30,000 marchers, many of them women. And there were at least 10,000 marchers from Delhi alone. Organisers said that by mid-morning 3200 busloads of supporters had arrived for the rally.
