The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opened its election campaign New Delhi on Wednesday at a women's rally against inflation.
Hundreds of housewives, demonstrating against what political speakers called soaring prices for food and home essentials, carried BJP flags and shouted anti-government slogans.
Madan Lal Khurana, Delhi state BJP president, and Vijay Raje Scinda, BJP vice-president, promised the women they would try to control prices should their party win next month's lower house election.
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi surprised the country on Tuesday by deciding that India's 500 million voters would elect a new lower house of parliament on November 22 and 24, six weeks earlier than necessary.
