Thousands of people rallied in support of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto in Karachi on September 6. The crowd gathered in a park in the centre of the capital and later spilled on to nearby streets, chanting slogans in support of Miss Bhutto and against the United States. The government of President Zia ul-Haq cracked down on all political opponents last month, and arrested Miss Bhutto for defying a government ban on opposition rallies. The exact number of people detained during the recent crackdown is not known, but opposition leaders said more than 6,000 of its leaders and activists have been arrested. Miss Bhutto, 33, daughter of the executed former Premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was granted the right to appear in court on September 9 to contest her detention. Observers said that the latest political crackdown, the toughest since more than eight years of martial law ended in December, 1985, has strained the credibility of President Zia's programme for restoring democracy in Pakistan.
