In New Delhi on Saturday, (6 March) India's former Prime Minister, Mr. Jagjivan Ram, addressed a rally of several thousand untouchables and other low castes who are demanding equal rights. More than three thousand people carrying banners and posters joined in the peaceful rally. Mr. Jagjivan Ram claimed that atrocities against the poor low castes and Harijans untouchables, had increased. The Indian constitution outlaws discrimination against the low castes and the tradition of untouchables is officially banned. But in practice these people suffer daily humiliation and discrimination persists, particularly at village level. As a result many of the poor lower castes are converting to Islam and Buddhism from the traditional Indian religion of Hindu. Mr. Jagjivan Ram called for countryside agitation.
