About 1,500 students chanting pro-democracy slogans and waving placards marched through the streets of Hong Kong to protest against the final draft of China's constitution for post-colonial Hong Kong.
Students from 12 Hong Kong universities and colleges staged a half-day boycott and marched to the Chinese diplomatic mission. Protesters held placards accusing the British of selling out Hong Kong, over the Basic Law agreement on the territory's constitution after 1997 when it is returned to Beijing. Under the terms of Basic Law, one-third of the local Legislature will be directly elected in 1997, rising to one-half in 2003. The plan has been widely criticized as to conservative by many Hong Kong residents.
The Basic Law is supposed to lay the legal foundation for Beijing's promises that Hongkong can maintain its capitalist system for 50 years after 1997 and enjoy a high degree of autonomy. However, confidence in those promises has diminished since June, when China suppressed the pro-democracy movement, which was widely supported in Hongkong.
