- Story Text: The Alliance for Change in Yugoslavia - the opposition
groups looking to oust Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic
from power - has held its last rally before the major one in
Belgrade scheduled for Thursday.
More than 15,000 local people gathered at a rally
organized by the opposition Alliance for Change in the centre
of the city of Nis on Wednesday (August 18), demanding
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic quit office.
The protesters cried "resignation, resignation!" and
carried a poster saying "Only Sloba Can Save Serbia by
Resigning", as well as Serbian flags and a poster of
Montenegrin President Milo Djukanovic.
All the Alliance leaders - Zoran Djindjic, Vladan Batic,
Goran Svilanovic, Velimir Ilic and Vuk Obradovic - arrived to
address the rally in this second biggest town in Serbia.
A representative of the Serbian Orthodox church also made
a speech.
It comes on the eve of a mass opposition rally, the first
in Belgrade after nearly two months of demonstrations across
the country calling for Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic
to stand down.
