A mass rally in Damascus on March 8 marked the 25th anniversary of Ba'ath Party rule in Syria. Thousands of high-school students raised clenched fists and chanted as Syrian President Hafez al-Assad arrived at the rally, held at an indoor stadium. President Assad made a speech, in which he supported the uprising in the West Bank and said there was nothing new in the current United States peace plan. He added, however, that he would not stand in the way of anyone working for peace provided that basic Arab rights were not sacrificed. Syria's Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party - Ba'ath means resurrection - has ruled Syria since March 8, 1963. Assad, an air force general, came to power in a bloodless coup in 1970.
