- Story Text: Dr. Mario Soares, Portugal's Socialist Party leader, told a rally of his supporters in Lisbon on Friday (31st October) that social democracy is not applicable to their country.
Dr. Soares, whose party is the largest in the new Portuguese Government, said he was not trying just to correct unjust aspects of capitalism but aimed to destroy capitalism itself.
Speaking on the country's economy for which his party will take most of the responsibility, he said the situation was very serious.
He added, however, that if his party could not solve the problems, no one else was likely to.
Unemployment in Portugal now stands at 500-thousand and is likely to become much higher as refugees return from Angola.
