  • Story Text: A rally attended by some 200,000 people was held in Omdurman in the Sudan on Tuesday (12 October) to mark the fifth anniversary of the nation as a republic under President Ja'after al-Nimeiry.

    SYNOPSIS: The rally, in the town's youth stadium, was attended by President Nimeiry, who came to power in a bloodless takeover in 1969, and declared the country a republic two years later. In his seven years as Sudan's leader, President Nimeiry has survived three major conspiracies to overthrow him. One of his major tasks has been to weld into one state a country stretching 1,200 miles (1.920kms) from north to south and covering about one million square miles (2 1.2 million square kms) in area. His second major problem was that of stimulating economic growth in a diverse country which, though rich in agricultural resources, suffers desperately from poor transport and lack of skilled manpower. The country was originally declared a republic when it gained independence from Anglo-Egyptian rule in 1956, but was taken over by the military two years later and parliament was abolished.
