- Story Text: One hundred and seventy four cars - eighty three of them British - left Noordwijk, a Dutch seaside resort, at half past midnight May 2 at the start of the 12th International Tulip Rally, the Dutch contribution to the European Rally Championship.
Competitors face a gruelling 2,500 mile route through Holland; Belgium; France to Monaco on the outward run, and back over the Alpes Maritimes, in and out of the Voyages, briefly visiting Germany and re-entering Holland near the Belgium border before returning to Noordwijk May 5.
A tight time schedule will be ensured by 47 control points enroute. To help classify competitosr, there are 15 special sections, with a higher average speed over the more difficult parts of the route, and several speed tests.
Only two events are provided to help drivers relax. They will enjoy the outward section drive through the tulip fields of Holland, now in full bloom, and a 22-hour rest period in Monte Carlo.
A prize-giving supper, and Tulip Rally ball will be held in Noordwijk on May 7.
