- Story Text: France's Rene Trautmann, in a Citroen DS 2I, and Finland's Hannu Mokkola in a Ford Escort battled for the lead in the London-to-Mexico World Cup Motor Rally yesterday (Saturday, April 25th) as the surviving crews swung into the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, at the end of its European stage.
Trautmann told reporters the toughest part of the marathon race so far had been in Yugoslavia, but added that the difficulties encountered were insignificant compared to those expected in South America.
Immediately on arrival in Lisbon after the 4-thousand and 5-hundred mile (7,230 KMS) swing round Europe, the drivers checked their cars into a closed parking lot at the harbour. While the cars go to Rio de Janeiro by sea, the competitors will rest at the millionaires resort town of Estoril, near Lisbon, for six days before flying to Brazil.
By midday, just over seventy cars reached the dockside area. A few vehicles were known to be stranded along the way, their crews feverishly trying to put mechanical trouble right. At that stage, a total number of 25 withdrawals had been reported to the Rally control centre since the cars left London.
