- Story Text: The seventy-one remaining cars in the World Cup motor rally were unloaded at Rio De Janeiro on Wednesday (6 May) in preparation for the South and Central American stretch of the gruelling 12,000 mile (19,000 km) run.
The cars were lowered from the freighter Derwent and mechanics were on hand to check the vehicles on the dockside. The leader at this stage was Citroen (No.93) driven by Rene Trautmann.
Ninety six cars set out on the European leg of the rally but by the time the drivers reached Lisbon crashes and mechanical breakdowns had forced 25 entrants to drop out. The drivers now face a testing run through Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, before reaching Chile where they climb into the Andes. From there they drive up the West Coast of South America to arrive in Mexico City on May 27th. Snow lying in passes in the Andes is a hazard which is worrying rally organisers.
Cars unloaded in Rio include a Soviet Moskvitch (No.84); and Austin Maxi (No.96); A Ford Lotus Cortina (No.15); an Austin Maxi (No.70) driven by Prince Michael of kent; a Ford Capri (No.11); and a Datsun 1500 (No.79).
The winning crew will collect GBP 10,000 sterling (24,000 dollars).
