- Story Text: In Cyprus on Thursday (15 July) Greek Cypriots observed the second anniversary of the Greek-inspired coup which led to the temporary removal from office of President Makarios.
SYNOPSIS: In Nicosia on Thursday morning, everyone stopped for three minutes silence in memory of those who died during the coup.
It was the coup which led to the Turkish invasion of the island and the resultant hostilies between the Greek and Turkish communities. Later, demonstrators marching to Nicosia's Eleftheria Square carried banners calling on foreign troops to go home and against a NATO solution for Cyprus. At present, a force of United Nations troops is in Cyprus to keep the peace and police the demilitarised zone between the two communities.
At eleftheria Square, government members were among the large crowd who were addressed by the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Lellos Demetriades. The government of President Makarios is said to be in favour of an international conference under United Nations auspices to solve the Cyprus question.
