- Story Text: A "Veteran an Vintage Drive into Europe" rally left London on Saturday (6 Jan) to drive to Brussels.
The rally is one of a series events in the "Fanfare for Europe" celebrations marking Britain's entry into the European Economic Community.
A wide variety of vehicles set out on the three-day run, including motor cycles, double-decker buses and a steam-driven lorry. One of the drivers was Lord Montague of Beaulieu whose museum of ancient vehicles is world-famous.
Lord Montague's father, 73 years ago, was the first man to race a British car on the Continent, and this weekend his son drove the same car to Brussels.
The rally was flagged away by Britain's Prime Minister, Mr. Heath, watched by a large crowd of spectators and a small crowd of Anti-market demonstrators.
SYNOPSIS: A veteran and vintage car rally left London on Saturday to drive to Brussels. The "Drive into Europe" is one of the events in the "Fanfare four Europe" celebrations.
73 years ago the then Lord Montague was the first man to race a British car in Europe... now this same car goes back... driven by his son.
The rally route will take the cars to Ostende, then through Ghent to Brussels.
At the start to see them off... Britain's Prime Minister Mr. Edward Heath... the man who leads his country into European Economic Community. Although Mr. Heath wasn't riding in, or on, only of the dozens of ancient machines, he was at the rally in an official capacity... as starter... a job he clearly enjoyed.
While the spectators in Horseguards Parade watched, Mr. Heath waved his flag... and a small crowd of anti-Common Market demonstrators waved their placards. Similar groups of protesters are appearing at virtually all the Fanfare for Europe activities.
But is was really the day of the old vehicles... and for sheer spectacle this old Foden Steam waggon probably stole the show... it moved majestically away amid hordes of petrol-driven motor cycles, cars, lorries and the traditional London double-decker bus.
