- Story Text: Thousands of Greek-Cypriot sympathizers attended a mass rally in Athens on Thursday (17 July) to mark the first anniversary of the Cyprus coup and the Turkish invasion of the island.
The rally was organised by the Panhellenic Committee for Cyprus Solidarity and held, with police consent, in Ares Park. There is a police ban on demonstrations in the centre of Athens.
All Greek national organisations and youth associations, including the Communists, took part.
The parliamentary Deputy General, George Iordanides, President of the organising committee, addressed the crowds. He condemned "the barbarous Turkish invasion with the support of the Americans". He called for the full application of the United Nations resolutions on Cyprus.
Cypriot leader Archbishop Makarios was represented by Cypriot MP Christoforos Christofides who brought the salute of the Cyprus Greeks to the rally.
Parliamentary members and political leaders were also at the rally, together with members of the Greek Resistance Federation. Among the demonstrators was Lady Fleming, a former member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) ousted from the party earlier this month during an internal rebellion.
