- Story Text: Several thousand Italian women gathered in Rome's Piazza Navona on Wednesday (25 June) to celebrate the release from custody of prominent abortion campaigner Emma Bonino.
She had been arrested the previous week at a polling station, having been hunted for several months in connection with running an abortion clinic in Florence.
All abortion is illegal in Italy, though there's a vigorous campaign at present underway to gather signatures to call for a referendum on the question of legalising the operation. Half a million signatures are needed.
During Wednesday's demonstration, plain-clothes policemen tried to arrest a woman who had been commenting on a film being shown. But demonstrators gathered round the woman and prevented the arrest.
