The killing of a policeman by Sikh extremists in a shoot-out at the Golden Temple shrine in Amritsar on Saturday produced a rare display of unity from political parties at a rally on March 8. The all-party rally in the town of Ludhiana was called to support the Chief Minister of the Sikh province of Punjab, Surgit Singh Barnala and there was strong criticism of the religious hardliners who have allegedly seized control of the Sikh religion in Punjab. 35 militants have been detained by police since Saturday's incident when an officer was killed and four others wounded as they tried to rescue an off-duty policeman, allegedly imprisoned and tortured by extremists. Communists Party Leader Harkrishnan Singh Surjeet accused the Sikh head priest Darshan Singh of lacking the courage to dissociate himself from the extremist and separatist elements.
