- Story Text: Thousands of members of Youth congress, the young people's wing of India's ruling Congress Party, held a mass rally in New Delhi on Wednesday (9 August) marking the start of celebrations for the silver jubilee of India's independence.
Their guest of honour was Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, who received a great ovation from youngsters lining the streets as she drove in cavalcade towards the Shivaji Stadium, where the rally took place.
During he speech to the assembled members of Youth Congress, Mrs. Gandhi urged the young people of India to work in service of their country by helping to eradicate poverty, and alter the Congress took an oath pledging action on Mrs. Gandhi's plea.
Formal jubilee celebrations will start on 14 August, eve of the day 25 years ago when India formally gained independence from Britain.
